Itinerary and tour description

Our desert trekking is an unforgettable nature experience! Together with like-minded adventurers and Moroccan desert nomads, we will go on a caravan into the infinite vastness of the desert. Several times a day there is the possibility to take a break at this breathtaking place of silence and let the landscape have its effect on you. Our adventure is accompanied by an experienced desert guide and a camel caravan. We use our time in the Sahara to discover the lightness of being for us and to treat ourselves to a break. We can be flexible about our itinerary and daily schedule. We start in Marrakech and head for the Sahara via Tamegroute. For the next seven days the desert will be our home. On the way back to Marrakech we have the opportunity to tank up on culture and Moroccan life in Zagora before we enter the turmoil of the royal city of Marrakech.

Everything is taken care of! We always make sure that during the desert trekking there is the possibility to wash or shower. Caravan tents, mattresses and food are also provided.

The highlights:

  • Culture and Moroccan attitude towards life in Marrakech, Tamegroute and Zagora
  • 7-day caravan through the Sahara of Morocco
  • Real adventure feeling
  • Wild camps in the middle of the Sahara
  • A unique nature experience in the midst of the highest sand dunes of the region
  • Intercultural exchange at eye level and unforgettable encounters with Morocco’s last nomads
Route South Morocco from Marrakech 6 days

Day 1 – Arrival

We are happy to pick you up at the airport or your hotel in Marrakech and take you to our riad in the heart of the old medina of Marrakech. After checking in and getting to know each other you have the possibility to use the rest of the day as you wish or to start your first exploration of the winding streets of Marrakech together with our guide. Dinner will be served in our cosy riad.

Day 2 – From Marrakech to Zagora

Our desert trekking Morocco starts in the morning in Marrakech. After the luggage is stowed, the journey begins in the direction of South Morocco to Zagora, about 370 km away. Through the majestic Atlas mountains and over the famous Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass our way leads us over the UNESCO world cultural heritage Ait Ben Haddou and the city Ouarzazate, the “gate of the south” and along the picturesque Draa valley, with its rustic clay settlements, the barren boulder formations and the enchanting palm groves, up to Zagora. On the way we always find time to stretch our feet, to eat something and to let the atmosphere of the surroundings have an effect on us. In Zagora we stay in a family hotel with a wonderful garden. There is still time for an exploration of the surroundings (together with the tour guide), a shower and to do some errands. In the evening we get our dinner served in the garden and discuss the coming days.

Day 2 – The adventure begins

After breakfast we start into the vastness of the Sahara. First we drive to the desert village Mhamid, about 100 km away. The road ends in the former caravan town and we prepare our caravan. After we have stowed everything, the adventure begins. On foot and with the support of our caravan and our desert guides, we make our way towards the Sahara. After about 3 hours of desert hiking (breaks as needed), we set up our camp. After we have erected the tents, gathered some firewood and fed the camels, we have a typical tea and lunch. Afterwards there is enough time for activities like washing, exploring the area or a little nap. In the evening we enjoy the sunset and arrive at the camp. We use the young night for a get-together at the campfire and a delicious dinner.

Days 4 to 8 – The desert opens its wide arms to us

After breakfast we stow away our luggage and spend about 4 hours hiking in the desert and then set up camp (individual breaks). After our tea and lunch, there is always time for our own activities (washing, showering, exploring, naps, etc.). Together with the tour guide there is always the possibility to explore the special features of the surroundings and to search for a very special picture motif. At sunset we will meet at the campfire. Day after day we dive further into the infinity of the desert and the simplicity of being.

On the 8th day we reach our fixed nomad camp. After five days we meet other people again and move into our nomad tents. Equipped with beds, electric light, sockets, doors, windows and water from the tap, we come closer to the “normal” world.

Day 8 – Departure from the desert

After our morning routine we review the last days together, pack our things and make our way back to Mhamid in the off-road vehicle. From Mhamid the way leads back to Zagora. Around noon we move into our rooms in a small family-run hotel and have lunch. The middle class hotel is simple and clean and offers the possibility to swim a few rounds in the pool. Our guide comes from the area and gives us the opportunity to explore the hidden secrets of the city, such as the almost forgotten Kasbah Amezrou, which is still inhabited today. This is an insider tip that is almost exclusively known to the locals and whose history has been passed down from generation to generation. After a walk through the surrounding palm grove we return to our hotel in the evening.

Day 9 – Return to Marrakech

After our morning routine, we go back to Marrakech. On the way there is enough time for lunch and breaks. When we reach Marrakech around 18:00 o’clock our journey ends and we will gladly take you to the airport, train station or to your riad.

As a tour operator, we offer you the opportunity to stay overnight in Marrakech free of charge and without obligation (flights and insurance). So you don’t have to worry about anything. Please let us know if you would like us to make you an offer for travel to and from Marrakech or for additional overnight stays in Marrakech. HERE you will find our contact details.

Our accommodations

Local accommodation with charm

OUR HOSTS:

True to our values and with a view to fair tourism, our accommodations are either local guesthouses or small family-run hotels where hospitality is still a priority. In spite of the local accommodations of our trips, we naturally pay attention to comfort when making our choices.

THE FURNISHING OF THE ACCOMMODATIONS:

Those who are used to a European 3-Star-Standard will get along well with our accommodations. There are predominantly no star catagories with us, which results mostly already alone from the remoteness of the accommodations and the kind of the “management”, however we pay attention very much to the fact that you feel well with us. There is a bed, shower, heating and usually also air conditioning and a pool. Not to forget the delicious meals, which are mostly prepared from traditional dishes with ingredients from the neighborhood or your own garden. You are always welcome to stay with us.

THE WILD DESERT CAMPS:

On the way we set up our wild camps. Depending on the size of the group, these camps consist of 1-3 large desert tents, a fireplace and a washing place. So body hygiene is not neglected during the trip. Our guides know the water places and oases and know exactly where a wild camp can best be set up. If you like, you can bring your own tent. The equipment and the luggage are transported with the help of our camel caravan. So nobody has to go physically to his limits. Food is of course also provided. For longer stays in the desert we organize supply caravans, which provide us with everything we need.

Of course there is no electricity in our wild camps. Those who depend on electricity should bring a solar panel with them. However, we recommend to simply switch off electrical devices.

THE FIXED DESERT CAMPS:

The desert camps are made to be able to spend the night as comfortably as possible in the desert. The fixed tents consist of a wooden or clay construction and heavy tent fabric. Carpets are laid out inside. Most of the tents are lockable and have enough space for equipment and backpacks in addition to a bed. Since most tents have an electrical outlet, the smartphone or camera can also be charged. Of course there are also facilities for washing and toilets. Most camps even have hot showers, which is a real luxury in a desert. Many adventurers like to sleep outside because the starry sky of the Sahara is simply unforgettable and the peace and space of the desert offers a good basis for a restful sleep. Before going to bed, you often meet at the campfire, tell stories, make music or exchange ideas. Of course, you don’t have to do without good food in the desert either.
