Itinerary and tour description

Our 4-day trekking tour to the Atlas Mountains offers you the opportunity to climb the highest mountain in North Africa and immerse yourself in the Berber mountain world. The tour starts in Marrakech, from where we first drive to Aroumd, about 1.5 hours away, to get used to the mountain air. We use the first day for acclimatization and to explore the area around the Berber village. On the second day we start the ascent to the Toubkal refuge at the foot of Jbel Toubkal. Here we gather more strength and spend the night. Early the next morning we start the summit ascent of Jbel Toubkal up to 4,167 meters, from where we can enjoy the best view of North Africa. After we have worked through the impressions, the descent to the mountain village of Imlil begins. From here we are taken back to Marrakech to check into our classic riad and explore Marrakech.

The highlights:

  • Trekking in the Atlas Mountains and Toubkal National Park
  • Ascent of the Jbel Toubkal
  • Mountain villages Aroumd and Imlil
  • Night in a classic riad in Marrakech and dinner on Djemaa el Fna
Route Trekking tour in Atlas Mountains incl. summit ascent, 4 days from Marrakech, Morocco

Day 1 – From Marrakech to Aroumd

The trekking tour to the Atlas Mountains starts! First we drive to the mountain village Aroumd, about 1.5 hours away, in the middle of the rugged mountain world of the Atlas mountains, which is the starting point for our expedition. Here, at an altitude of 1900 metres, we first familiarise ourselves with the mountain air and the surroundings. Discuss the next days, check our equipment and explore the surroundings together with our guide and prepare us for the adventurous days ahead. We spend the night in a traditional inn in Aroumd.

Hiking time: any

Target altitude: 1900 meters

That’s what happens:

  • Mountain village Aroumd
  • First hike in the mountains around Aroumd

Day 2 – From Aroumd to the refuge Toubkal

We hike through the picturesque Ait Mizane valley and get a first impression of the charm of this unique mountain world. Shallow mountain streams, snow-capped peaks and rugged rock formations characterise the landscape. At an altitude of about 2350 metres we reach the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. The shrine is dedicated to the king of the djinn and is said to have healing powers. Pilgrims from all over Morocco take the arduous hike on themselves to get rid of infertility and rheumatism. Rumour has it that even mental illnesses can be cured with the help of an animal sacrifice in this place. During a break we refresh ourselves at the small waterfall with clear mountain water and take a little time to let this impressive spot of earth work on us. The path winds its way up the mountain to the snowline of Jbel Toubkal. Here, at an altitude of 3200 metres, we reach our daily destination, the Toubkal refuge.

Day 3 – Summit ascent of Jbel Toubkal

Today we reach the highest peak of North Africa! Our way leads over the river above the refuge and from there on uncomplicatedly further in the direction of the summit. The last stretch to the summit of Jbel Toubkal at 4167 metres is technically easy. However, the scree and the height demand our last efforts. A breathtaking view awaits us, from the Marrakech plain to the High Atlas in the north and the Sahara in the south. A really worthwhile hike! We let this unique moment sink and gather our strength for the descent. In Imlil we are already expected to be driven back to Marrakech. In Marrakech we move into our rooms in a classic riad in the medina and have our dinner served in the middle of the evening atmosphere of the world-famous Djemaa el Fna.

Our accommodations

Local accommodation with charm

True to our values and with a view to fair tourism, our accommodations are either local guesthouses or small family-run hotels where hospitality is still a priority. In spite of the local accommodations of our trips, we naturally pay attention to comfort when making our choices.

Those who are used to a European 3-Star-Standard will get along well with our accommodations. There are predominantly no star catagories with us, which results mostly already alone from the remoteness of the accommodations and the kind of the “management”, however we pay attention very much to the fact that you feel well with us. There is a bed, shower, heating and usually also air conditioning and a pool. Not to forget the delicious meals, which are mostly prepared from traditional dishes with ingredients from the neighborhood or your own garden. You are always welcome to stay with us.

The mountain refuges and shelters we use correspond to what can be expected from such a “refuge” and resemble the mountain refuges in Europe. The mountain refuges are more reminiscent of mountain hostels. They offer a good opportunity to have a good meal in a barren and remote region after a strenuous hiking day, to review the day, to enjoy the view and to sleep. But the atmosphere is all the more familiar and welcoming as most hotels and inns… not to mention the majestic scenery that surrounds you. The heating is mostly classical with wood stoves. The rooms are mostly multi-bed rooms. Sanitary facilities and washing facilities are also available.
