Itinerary and tour description

The 9-day round trip south Morocco and the Atlantic Ocean combines the best of the south of Morocco and the Atlantic coast. Beginning in the culturally rich royal city of Marrakech, the route first leads along the Atlantic coast. In the port towns of Essaouira and Taghazout you will first experience the maritime side of Morocco. Then we continue into the seclusion of the desert. On the camel back and in the Offroad-Jeep we explore the secrets of the Sahara and enjoy the peace in the midst of the highest sand dunes of the region. Afterwards our adventure continues and we visit the nearby cultural center of the south, because in Tamegroute and Zagora there is a lot to discover! The last part of the tour includes the Atlas Mountains, a mountain world of deep gorges, high peaks and sleepy oases. From the oasis Fint we start our way home via the World Heritage Site Ait Ben Haddou back to Marrakech.

The highlights:

  • Royal city of Marrakech
  • Port cities of Essaouira and Taghazout
  • Night in a desert camp / desert safari / fossil expedition
  • Cultural Centre of the South (Tamegroute and Zagora)
  • Atlas Mountains
  • World Cultural Heritage Ait Ben Haddou
Reiseroute der Rundreise Südmarokko und Atlantik ab Marrakesch, 8 Tage in Marokko

Day 1 – Arrival

We are happy to pick you up at the airport or your hotel in Marrakech and take you to our riad in the heart of the old medina of Marrakech. After checking in and getting to know each other you have the possibility to use the rest of the day as you wish or to start your first exploration of the winding streets of Marrakech together with our guide. Dinner will be served in our cosy Riad.

Day 2 – From Marrakech to Taghazout

In the morning we leave Marrakesh and head for Essaouira, a charming harbour town on the Atlantic coast and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has already fascinated hippie icons like Jimi Hendrix. After exploring the city of artists, musicians and freethinkers, we continue along the Atlantic coast to the quaint fishing village of Taghazout. Here there is enough time to enjoy the maritime atmosphere and the beauty of this insider tip. For dinner and the night we will stay in our comfortable hotel.

That’ s what happens:

  • Harbour town Essaouira and freshly caught fish
  • Fishing village Taghazout

Day 3 – From Taghazout to Foum Zguid

After breakfast, the route continues along the Atlantic Ocean and via Agadir into the interior of the country. The next destination is the oasis town of Taliouine. Here you can already feel the seclusion and tranquillity of the rugged, scree-like hilly landscape with its green oases and palm groves. You are already getting closer to the soul of South Morocco! The new impressions, which stand in strong contrast to the maritime landscape of the Atlantic, invite us to a small hike through the palm groves. During a visit to the feminist carpet cooperative (optional) and lunch with our berber hosts you can get closer to the locals and get to know the moroccan hospitality. For the night and dinner we continue to the palm oasis Foum Zguid, for a quiet, traditional guesthouse.

That’ s what happens:

  • Oases and palm groves
  • Oasis Town Taliouine
  • Dining together with Berbers of the region
  • Palm oasis Foum Zguid

Day 4 – From Foum Zguid to the Sahara

Our desert safari begins! Over the dry lake Iriki we reach the Sahara. On sunny days you can watch Fata Morganas. Our desert guide leads us to fossils of long forgotten times. On official school days we also visit a nomadic school. Here you can have a tea and get a deep insight into the life of the nomads. After lunch and a tea break we saddle up on Dromedare. At the largest sand dune, the Erg Chegaga, lies our desert camp. We explore the dunes of the area and watch the sunset over the Sahara. After a refreshing shower and a dinner at the campfire we bed down in nomadic tents. Our recommendation is to spend the night under the unique starry sky.

That’ s what happens:

  • Dried-out lake Iriki
  • Fossil Expedition
  • Intercultural exchange with the local nomads
  • Dromedary ride through the Sahara
  • Sunset over the Erg Chegaga
  • Night in the desert camp

Day 5 – From the desert towards Zagora

The day begins with an excursion through the sand dunes of the Sahara with an off-road jeep. So we make our way into the neighboring stone desert. We visit the most important points of the desert caravans of long ago times. With a little luck and the intuition of our guides, we come into contact with the last nomadic tribe of the region, for an intercultural exchange and a relaxed tea. In the holy oasis of Oum Lâalag we recharge our batteries and head for Tamegroute. Here we visit the library with Koran copies from the 12th century and the well-known ceramic cooperative. After Tamegroute we continue to Zagora, where we visit the ancient and still inhabited jewish Kasbah of Amezrou. Both the Kasbah and the Cooperative Museum, which we visit, are real insider tips, almost exclusively known to the locals. Overnight and dinner in a small guesthouse in Zagora.

That’ s what happens:

  • Offroad safari through the desert
  • Intercultural exchange with the last nomadic tribe of the region
  • Tamegroute / Library / Ceramic-Cooperative
  • Zagora
  • Jewish Kasbah of Amezrou
  • Cooperative Museum

Day 6 – From Zagora to Tinghir

The route begins in the direction of the berber town of Tinghir. On our way through the picturesque Draa Valley we pass through the beautiful towns of Tazzarine and Alnif. If necessary we can stop here (beautiful market in Alnif!) and have a few things done. In Tinghir you can experience the epic landscape of the Atlas Mountains. Especially the gorge of Todra Gorges offers an impressive insight into the impressive mountains of Morocco. We take the opportunity for a short hike to the Gorges Boumalne. We spend the night in a small hotel in the area.

That’ s what happens:

  • Draa valley
  • Berber town Tazzarine, Alnif and Tinghir
  • Atlas Mountains and the most beautiful gorges
  • Mountain hike

Day 7 – From Tinghir to the Fint Oasis

After breakfast the route leads via Boumalne Dadès, El-Kelâa M’Gouna and Skoura towards Ouarzazate. All typical places for the region, which can be explored at will thanks to our regional tour guide. Many new impressions and cultures are waiting for us. In Ouarzazate there is the option to visit the Kasbah Taourirt. In order to process the many experiences and impressions of the last days and to take in the peace and relaxation of Southern Morocco for the last time, we will go to the remote oasis Fint in the middle of a barren stone, sand and rock world. You decide for yourself how you want to spend the last hours in the peace of seclusion. Whether pool, a cool drink or a walk through the oasis.

That’ s what happens:

  • Street of the 1.000 Kasbahs
  • Boumalne Dadès, El-Kelâa M’Gouna and Skoura
  • Fint Oasis

Day 8 – From the oasis Fint to Marrakech

Today we go “back to civilization”. On the way to Marrakech we first visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ait Ben Haddou. Afterwards the way leads over the medieval mountain village Telouet, with its old Kasbah, which radiates despite its rather bad condition a quite special charm. Over the High Atlas and the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass we finally reach Marrakech. Dinner is served on the famous Djemaa el Fna and we spend the night in a traditional riad.

That’ s what happens:

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site Ait Ben Haddou
  • Telouet with its old Kasbah
  • Marrakech and Djemaa el Fna

Day 9 – Last day in Marrakech

Our accommodations

Local accommodations with charm

OUR HOSTS:

True to our values and with a view to fair tourism, our accommodations are either local guesthouses or small family-run hotels where hospitality is still a priority. In spite of the local accommodations of our trips, we naturally pay attention to comfort when making our choices.

THE FURNISHING OF THE ACCOMMODATIONS:

Those who are used to a European 3-Star-Standard will get along well with our accommodations. There are predominantly no star catagories with us, which results mostly already alone from the remoteness of the accommodations and the kind of the “management”, however we pay attention very much to the fact that you feel well with us. There is a bed, shower, heating and usually also air conditioning and a pool. Not to forget the delicious meals, which are mostly prepared from traditional dishes with ingredients from the neighborhood or your own garden. You are always welcome to stay with us.

THE DESERT CAMPS:

The desert camps are designed to be as comfortable as possible in the desert. The attached tents consist of a wooden or clay construction and heavy tent fabric. Carpets are laid out inside. Most tents are lockable and have enough space for equipment and backpacks. Since most tents have an electrical outlet, the smartphone or camera can also be charged. Of course there are also facilities for washing and toilets. Most camps even have hot showers, which is a real luxury in a desert. Many adventurers like to sleep outside because the starry sky of the Sahara is simply unforgettable and the peace and space of the desert offers a good basis for a restful sleep. Before going to bed, you often meet at the campfire, tell stories, make music or exchange ideas. Of course, you don’t have to do without good food in the desert either.
